On Saturday I went to the South Seaport exhibition center to see "Bodies: The Exhibition". Controversy aside, I thought that the exhibition was very well put together. It starts with a pretty much in-tact human body, minus the skin so you could see what the muscles look like. From here, the exhibit peels back the layers, showing various models with only organs, then nerves then eventually, just the vessels (they filled the bodies with a special polymer that hardened, then chemically treated the body to leave nothing but the blood vessels).
No cameras were allowed, mainly due to the amount of people that crammed in to see the event (as well as to sell the book). Its been in NYC since 2004, however the popularity hasn't seemed to wane. Indeed, the controversy surrounding subsequent openings in Maimi, Seattle, and Las Vegas has sparked renewed interest.
I'm a squeamish person by nature, but found the event fascinating. The
treatment leaves the bodies with a rubbery look (and yes, feel), so it
is very easy to detach oneself from what you are looking at. Others have also said that the admission price isn't worth just seeing bodies, however there was plenty to see - it took me over 2 hours to get through everything. In addition to bodies, they have specific organs and muscle groups on display.
