I finally signed up for Netflix.
I had looked at it years ago when they first came out, but wasn't too impressed with the site. Why not just go to the video store when I want to watch movies?
3 weeks in NY was enough to change that attitude. Yes, there is a blockbuster nearby. But it sucks. The selection sucks, the employees suck, and the pricing ($4.85 for an old release!) sucks. So why not give Netflix a shot?
The first thing that I found - and love - is the ability to see what's in your friend's que. Who knew that Jayson and Jessica thought the movie "Lords of Dogtown" was a five star movie and "A League of Their Own" was only two? Can I trust their opinion? A movie based on a documentary based on skinny white nerds who invented skateboarding starring an Australian Heath Ledger? Hmm....
Anyway, what's your netflix ID? Send me an invite: jmilwaukee@yahoo.com

You can rate movies you haven't seen. Though I don't recall renting Fever Pitch nor voting on it. Now maybe you are confused with Beaver Itch, that was a good one.

Okay, I have to defend myself with this one in stating that my husband does ALL the Netflix rating. I haven't even seen A League of their Own, but yes I did like Lords of Dogtown. Wait a minute, I've never seen Fever Pitch either. Are you sure you're looking at the right people's Netflix list?? I'm a little suspicious now.

I checked, and Blockbuster doesn't carry Flesh Gordon. Does Netflix?
If you're a pervert like Cheri, I suppose Netflix is the way to go. =)

I love Netflix. And yes, I was the one who rented the unfortunate Flesh Gordon.
But now that you've dissed my choice of low quality spoof-porn, you probably will be horrified by what you see in my Queue anyway!
Flesh Gordon was a tragic theatrical mistake. But even the most tragic movie choices can have an amusing upside.

Ummm, "skinny white nerds who invented skateboarding"? CLEARLY you have not actually SEEN Lords of Dogtown.
Though admittedly, the documentary was much better. I didn't much care for the artistic liberties taken in the movie, like with the sick kid, and that whole thing with Stacy Peralta supposedly being an underdog who had to earn respect from the gang before they let him join in. That kid was their secret weapon from the start.
But that's just what I think.

I've had Blockbuster Online, so I know they don't have the Friends feature.
I have both real-life Netflix Friends and Web-only Netflix Friends, and Netflix tells me that my Web friends correlate with my taste 77%, but my real-life friends correlate only 57%, according to how we rate movies on Netflix.
Wal-mart discontinued their online DVD rental business and sold it to Netflix.
Even if you use the coupons John is talking about, the movies you get from Blockbuster stores still have due dates, and you have to return them to the store, and the in-store selection still sucks. It depends on your choice of plan whether the coupons apply to games.
I've had both Blockbuster Online and Netflix, and I prefer Netflix.

Hey wait, wasn't it YOU who rented "Flesh Gordon"? Or was it Cheri?? hmm...

I've learned not to select movies based on recommendations from friends, for the exact reasons you're able to ridicule Jason and Jessica for their Netflix movie ratings: Poor taste.
Just kidding. Blockbuster doesn't have the friends thing. I guess that might be pretty cool. If anything, your high ratings may tell me which movies to avoid. =)

Initial observations:
1. I haven't found a movie that isn't immediately available.
2. Overnight shipping - I que'd Sunday night, got an email notifying me Monday that it shipped, and I got it today.
3. Friend list. Not sure if Blockbuster has this (does it?). I don't know about you, but I would say that half of the movies I watch are based off of movie recommendations from my friends. As I'm away now, I don't get the recommendations I normally would. Adding Jayson and Jessica to my list accomplishes three things: 1. Gives me ideas on what movies to watch (oh, you remember that summer of wandering movie isles, don't you). 2. Lets me get their opinion on the movie.
3. Gives me an entirely new source of material with which to lambast Jayson about. You can't underestimate the value of this. They rated "Fever Pitch" 4 stars. Seriously. Only in Jayson and Jessica land does a Jimmy Fallon movie get a 4 star rating.
I heard Walmart also has a video rental service now. I don't know of anyone else using that one, but I bet it'd be hard to get "Larry the Health Inspector" through them.

Never tried Netflix either, but we have been very happy with Blockbuster Online. They allow you to hold three movies at a time, they always deliver them from your queue within 2 days, and if we're feeling spontaneous, they provide two free coupons every month for a free video or game rental from any of their stores.
What's so great about Netflix?
