Marquette lost in the first round of the tourney and already I have recieved emails from well-intentioned friends trying to give me a good ribbing. Really? If your dog were to die, would it be in good taste for me to send puppy jokes one minute later (I guess I shouldn't have given her that anti-freeze!!)? But I realize that some folks just don't know all the unwritten rules about things like this.
Simply put, when a friend's team loses, you must try to avoid mention of the loss for 24 hours. The more gut-wrenching the loss and the greater the importance to the said friend, the longer you must hold off. First contact must contain either shared grief or a declaration of anger. Remember how no one talked about the Superbowl for a day after they lost?
The thought that your friends realized exactly what they were doing when sending the taunting message is too depressing to comprehend; gleefully twisting the rusty knife that now sticks from the hollow belly of my Marquette soul.
